Sandy with a Petri Racer
2021/05/28: The Petri Racer was introduced in 1966, it was offered as a smaller lighter version of the 7S but with the same F2.8 or F1.8 lens options. The shutter button was also moved from the top of the camera to the front. Also like the 7S it has an uncoupled light meter and the Camera is completely mechanical and so can be used without a battery which in this case is a good thing because the meter on mine is not working! While the camera is a tad smaller & lighter than the 7S the difference is nothing to write home about! It doesn’t really feel any smaller or lighter in the hand or the pocket. I’m sure you can get accustomed to the front positioned shutter button but I kept trying to take photos by pressing the cable release knob! Personally I think I still prefer the 7S to the Racer but others may think differently. For the photos that follow I loaded it with a roll of Kentmere 400 and shot it around my local town of Sandy Oregon on Memorial Day Weekend.

The OM1 goes to Smith Rock.
2021/05/23: While I took the Olympus Infinity to Smith Rock that was just to see if it was working! I also took my Olympus OM1 loaded with some Kodak Color Plus 200 Film and a Tokina AT-X 28-85 F3.5-4.5 lens in the hopes of getting a few halfway decent shots. Blue skies would have made for better shots but at least the rain held off!

Olympus AF-1 (Infinity)
The Olympus AF-1 (Called Infinity in the USA) was introduced in 1986 & was the first Weatherproof compact autofocus camera on the market. Developed from the 1983 Olympus AFL or “Picasso” it was given the nickname “Nuretemo-Pikaso” meaning “Wet Flash” which was shortened to “Nurepika” highlighting the weatherproof features of the camera. The camera has a great F2.8 lens but one common complaint is that there is no way to turn off the flash. The camera will use it whenever it thinks it needs it!
I didn’t know if this camera was in working condition or not though it did make all the right sounds! I loaded it with a 2002 expired roll of Kirkland Signature 200 (Agfa). The film has some serious age related color shifts so the photos that came out of the camera are nothing to write home about but I now know the camera works. I always try to limit the digital editing of my film scans to just exposure and contrast but these needed something more so I adjusted for white balance too, I also left the originals for comparison. The Monkey Face

The Pentax PC35 AF
was the first Auto Focus Camera made by Pentax and has some solid specs, especially it’s 35mm F2.8 five element lens. The infrared triangular autofocus is super fast and silent. F stops between 2.8 to 16, shutter speeds of 1/8th to 1/430th. A film ISO range of 25 to 400. First released in 1982 & made in Japan the camera kept some important manual functions, it could not read film DX codes so the ISO had to be set manually. The wind forward and film rewind are still manual and not automated. These are pluses in my book as 40 years on these are things that are likely to break and render a camera useless. Later versions made in Hong Kong added all of these common point & shoot conveniences.
The point & shoot film revival crowd haven’t found this camera yet and so prices are much cheaper than on some other models with the same specs. I have no plans to buy a contax T2 for $1200.00 any time soon! Still at around $100.00 relying on 40 year old electronics to work they are not cheap & more than I wanted to pay! I picked mine up for $40.00 because the flash wouldn’t stay down and so was always charged and battery draining! However 2 inches of black electrical tape solved that problem and everything else about the camera works. I can even remove the electrical tape when needed to use the flash! These photos are from my first test roll of Tri X 400 that I put through the camera.Once a grain silo.

Two hikes with an Olympus 35SP
Photos from 2 hikes taken with my Olympus 35SP, the first on Archer Mt. on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge on 2021/05/02 & the second a Loop around Indian Point & Nick Eaton Ridge on the Oregon side on 2021/05/09. If I could only have 1 rangefinder camera (a horrible thought) I would probably pick this one made between 1969-76 with it’s excellent F1.7 lens and dual metering system.
For these pics I let the camera make all the decisions leaving it in Auto Mode for the whole roll. I loaded the camera with my last roll of some 2008 expired Fujicolor Superia 200 I picked up on ebay. The rolls didn’t come with any storage history but I shot it at box speed and was pleased with how every roll came out.Archer Mt.

Minolta Talker!
It’s a talker! A few weeks ago fellow film shooter Shawn Granton (@urbanadventureleaguepdx) kindly sent me this Minolta AF-S V&D to try out. The camera introduced in 1984 was unique in that it spoke to you. Giving you helpful hints like “Load Film” “Use Flash” etc. All very gimmicky but hey it’s a Minolta with a F2.8 lens! This version also has the Quartz Data pack which gave me the luxury of having it talk in Japanese or English. I found it funny that in English it just barks simple orders at you but in Japanese it politely asks you to do things ☺. Shawn had shared in his report on the camera that it tended to underexpose shots in fact this seems to be a common problem with the camera perhaps even when it was new based on other internet reviews. Knowing this I loaded it with some Fujicolor Superia 400 and set the ISO to 200. I took a selection of photos with and without flash at a friend’s birthday party and out on a hike. All but 5 out of 39 were property exposed. The camera seemed to have the most trouble figuring out exposure in bright sunlight and oddly it was these shots that tended to be underexposed. The auto focus worked well so long as it was focusing more than about 3’ away. Closer than that & the photos were blurred.
Actually the best thing about this Camera isn’t the voice chip but it’s excellent film loading system. It allows you to see that the film is properly loaded before you close the camera back and it makes maximum use of a roll, I got 39 shots out of a 36 roll. Like all these old 1980’s electronic cameras they are operating on borrowed time long past their planned serviceable life. When I finished the roll it did not rewind, I was on the verge of opening up the camera in the dark to take the film out but decided first to give it a sharp tap, well 3 or 4 sharp taps actually after which the rewind motor burst into life! It was a fun little camera to use. I'll definitely put another roll through it then decide if I’ll keep it or pass it on to another lucky recipient to try. If you search Youtube for this camera you will find a couple of fun Japanese commercials for it from the 80’s!minolta AFSminolta talkerfujicolor xtra 400fujicolor xtra400
